Gene Chandler (born Eugene Dixon, but renamed himself after his favorite actor, Jeff Chandler) really hit the big time with this tune, and became so identified with it that his record company (foolishly) decided to bill later records as simply "The Duke Of Earl". This was quickly stopped when Chandler's sales went down due to the name change! By the way, Gene's old group, The Dukays are backing him up on this 45.
