Johnny Ace was the first great rock casualty. After a string of brilliant singles for the Duke label, Ace "accidentally" shot himself in a game of Russian roulette backstage at the Houston Auditorium on Christmas Eve, 1954. He died the next day. Shortly afterwards, his new song, "Pledging My Love" became his biggest hit. "The Clock", another one of his hits from 1953, sounds even eerier since Ace's untimely death...
